Forms

The first thing you will need to do before driving on the road is get hold of a provisional licence. The form you need is:- Form D1, application for a driving licence which is available at Post Offices and from the DVLA. You can also book online through the direct.gov link.

Age restrictions

Although you can't drive until you're 17 you can get hold of your provisional licence whilst you are still 16.
You should be aware that the licence will not become valid until you reach your 17th birthday.

Cost

A provisional licence is currently £50

Reading up

If you already have a provisional licence but are not yet 17 the best thing you can do while you wait is to start reading some books on driving. I recommend:
The Highway Code - find on Amazon.co.uk
The official theory test book - find on Amazon.co.uk
The driving manual - find on Amazon.co.uk

All available from the DSA or normal book shops.

Getting started

Once you have your provisional licence and reach the age of 17 (or a week or two before) give me a call to book your first proper driving lesson, on 01483 721675 or 07773 125887.

Foreign license holders may find the form D100 useful, available from the post office.
