When can I start my lessons?
You can apply for your provisional licence up to 2 months before your 17th birthday, but you will not be able to drive until the day of your birthday. You must have your licence in your possession before you can drive.
If you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate your provisional licence will come into effect when you are 16, but you can apply for it within three months of your 16th birthday.
How long will it take before I can book my test?
Everyone is different and will learn at a different rate, so it is impossible to say exactly. Things such as whether you’ve ridden a motorbike, how often you are taking lessons, how long those lessons are, whether you are getting private practice will all affect how long it will take you. The DSA quote a figure of 'about 45 hours of professional training, combined with at least 20 hours of private practice' to be successful. Remember, it’s not just about being able to control the car, it's about gaining experience in different situations to become a good safe driver for life.
My Dad says he only had 10 hours of lessons and passed, why will it take me longer?
Cars, roads and driving conditions have changed over the years. The roads are a lot busier, so the test has become harder to ensure new drivers can drive safely. This includes the introduction of the theory test (1996) and the hazard perception test (2002).
Are intensive driving courses any good?
Certainly they work for some people but for others an intensive driving course (or crash course) is too intense! It will depend very much on the individual. But remember it's not a short cut - you still have to learn the same amount.
What do I have to do in the Theory Test?
There are two parts. The first is a series of 50 multiple choice questions. You have 57 minutes to answer them. The pass mark is 43 out of 50. Then there is the hazard perception test, which is a series of 14 video clips. You must identify the hazards as they develop and your score depends on when you identify each hazard. The pass mark is 44 out of 75. There are many books and CD ROMS on the market to help you with the test.

What will I have to do in the Practical Test?
The Practical Test will last approximately 40 minutes. First of all, you need to pass the eyesight test – reading a number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres (or 67 feet). Then you will be asked two “show me/tell me” questions – basic vehicle safety and maintenance questions. The main part of the test is to demonstrate your ability to drive safely and according to the Highway Code. This will include general driving, two reversing manoeuvres and possibly an emergency stop. I shall make sure you a fully aware of what is expected from you on test day throughout your lessons.

Will I be able to take the test in your car?
Yes, if you wish to. Normally this will take the form of a 2 hour lesson, with the second hour being the test. The first hour will be used to get comfortable, and calm any nerves!
Can I take the test in my own car?
You can take the test in any car, as long as it is roadworthy and properly taxed and insured. It must also have a second mirror for the examiner, and both front seats must have headrests.
I can't find one or both parts of my Driving Licence?
If you cannot find your licence and you have not had a lesson with me before I will be unable to take you out until I have seen both parts of your current valid licence.
If you have already had lessons with me please contact the DVLA for a replacement but lessons can continue as normal.
How do I cancel a lesson?
Lessons must be cancelled with at least 24 hours notice. Lessons cancelled less than 24 hours before the lesson will still be charged at the full rate.
You can cancel a lesson by telephone, text or email. Please make sure you have a reply from me to make sure I have received your message.
